Electric Roasting (and why it makes a better cup of coffee)

Last week we discussed different roasting levels and their impact on flavor profiles and notes. This week, we are exploring the process of roasting itself and an exciting new development that Tipsy Bean has been able to explore: All-Electric Roasting!

Bellwether All-Electric Roaster

What Is Electric Roasting?

Traditional coffee roasting relies on gas-powered machines, which, while effective, contribute to higher carbon emissions and energy consumption. Electric roasting, on the other hand, utilizes electric energy to heat the roasting chamber. Today we hope to explain how electric roasting is not only good for the environment but makes a better cup of coffee than traditional roasting methods.

Environmental Benefits

One of the standout advantages of electric roasting is its significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Unlike gas-powered roasters, electric roasters don't emit carbon dioxide or other pollutants into the atmosphere. By switching to electric, Tipsy Bean is able to reduce its own carbon footprint by a whopping 87 percent!

Many electric roasters are designed with sustainability in mind, incorporating features like energy-saving modes and advanced temperature control. These innovations not only help in reducing energy usage but also allow for better management of resources throughout the roasting process.

Better Coffee Quality

One of the key benefits of electric roasting is its precision. Electric roasters offer precise control over temperature and roasting time, allowing for more consistent and replicable results. This precision ensures consistency of each batch of coffee. Because we have such control over the roasting variables, we are able to not only make the roasts we offer more consistent in flavor, but try out different adjustments to make our blends even better. Electric roasters typically provide more even heat distribution compared to gas roasters. This even heating helps in achieving a more uniform roast, which is crucial for developing the complex flavors and aromas that coffee lovers seek.

Tipsy Bean is excited to join the future of a roasting process that aligns with our values as a local cafe, as well as a process that increases its quality to give our consumers the best possible product. When you walk into our cafe, you can see our all-electric roaster right behind the register. Feel free to ask questions about our roaster when you come grab your afternoon pick-me-up!
