Brewing Methods (A Series): The AeroPress

AeroPress.com

Is the AeroPress for you? Here are some things to consider:

  • The AeroPress is a perfect brewing method for those wanting to brew a single eight-ounce cup of coffee with an easy clean up.

  • It is one of the quickest brewing methods, at just two minutes, taking less than five minutes between prep, brewing, and cleanup.

  • The AeroPress makes a stronger cup of coffee, so it doesn’t do well with darker roasts. If you like medium and lighter roasts of coffee, the AeroPress does quite well bringing out the nuances in those roasts.

If you think the AeroPress is for you, below are instructions on how to use one. There are two different methods you can try with the AeroPress, but we are going to stick with the standard method today.

Standard Brewing Method

  1. Boil water to about (water that is about 200 degrees Fahrenheit does well).

  2. Grind (we recommend a medium-fine grind) and set aside 1 scoop (about 18 grams) of coffee.

  3. Removed the plunge entirely from the immersion chamber.

  4. Remove the filter cap from the immersion chamber and place a microfilter in the cap. Screw the filter cap back onto the immersion chamber. The microfilter helps prevent grit and bitter oils from tainting your cup of coffee, protecting it from having a bitter and chalk-like taste and texture.

  5. Place the immersion chamber on your coffee mug and put 18 grams of coffee grounds into the chamber (if your AeroPress comes with a scoop, once scoop is equivalent to 18 grams).

  6. The AeroPress is labeled with numbers one-four. For this traditional method, to let your coffee bloom, fill the chamber up to the number one and let it sit anywhere between ten to thirty seconds. Then, continue to fill the chamber all the way to the number four.

  7. Once the chamber is full, take a spoon (or the paddle included) and stir the coffee three times.

  8. Take the plunger and place it about a half inch into the chamber, vacuum sealing the coffee. This stops the drip and allows the coffee to brew.

  9. Let the coffee sit and brew for about one minute, then steadily and slowly press the plunger into the chamber, forcing the coffee out. Be careful not to go too quickly.

Clean Up

One of the perks of the AeroPress, in my opinion, is the clean up. To clean your AeroPress, remove the filter cap and continue to push the plunger through the immersion chamber until the coffee puck and microfilter at the bottom pop out into the trash. Then, simply rinse the AeroPress and let it dry. It’s such an easy coffee clean up!
